SIL vs ILO: What’s the Difference?
September 13, 2026
If you’re looking at NDIS accommodation, you’ll likely come across Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Individualised Living Options (ILO). Both can support people to live more independently, but they work in different ways.
Here’s a simple breakdown.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
SIL provides support with everyday activities such as personal care, meal preparation, household tasks and building independence.
It is usually provided in a shared home with other NDIS participants, with support workers rostered around the needs of the people living there.
SIL may suit someone who needs regular, ongoing support throughout the day and potentially overnight.

What is an Individualised Living Option (ILO)?
An ILO is designed around the individual. You work with a provider to create a living arrangement based on your goals, preferences and support needs.
This could include living alone with visiting support, living with a host or sharing with a housemate.
ILO generally starts with an exploration and design process before the living arrangement is established.

What’s the difference between SIL and ILO?
The main difference is how the living arrangement and support are structured.
SIL is generally more structured, with regular rostered support provided in a shared home. It can be suitable for people who have higher or more consistent support needs.
ILO starts with the individual. The living arrangement and support are designed around your preferences, which can provide more flexibility around where and with whom you live.
Neither option is automatically better. It depends on your support needs, goals, preferred living arrangement and level of independence.
Which option could suit you?
Some questions to consider include:
- How much support do you need each day?
- Do you want to live with other people?
- Do you want more choice over who you live with?
- Do you need support in place quickly?
- Would you prefer an arrangement designed specifically around you?
Your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager can also help you understand which option may suit your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have both SIL and ILO in my plan?
Your funding will depend on your individual circumstances and assessed support needs. Speak with your Support Coordinator or planner about which option may be appropriate.
Is SIL or ILO cheaper?
There isn’t a simple answer. Costs depend on the level of support required and the individual living arrangement.
How do I start exploring an ILO?
You’ll generally need ILO exploration funding in your plan before working with a provider to explore and design potential living arrangements.
