Short Term Respite Options in South East Queensland: A Quick Reference
October 20, 2026
Need to line up Short Term Respite (STR) for a participant in South East Queensland? Here’s a quick guide to what it is, what to check and how to arrange a stay with Aspire Hub.
What is Short Term Respite?
Short Term Respite (STR), previously known as Short Term Accommodation (STA), is an NDIS support that gives participants time apart from their usual care arrangements while giving their primary informal supports a break from their caring responsibilities.
The NDIS generally funds STR for up to 28 days per year, which can be used flexibly depending on the participant’s plan and circumstances.
For the latest information about STR and how it can be used, visit the NDIS Short Term Accommodation information page.
What should I check before arranging STR?
Before organising a stay:
- Check the participant’s NDIS plan to confirm their available STR funding and how it can be used.
- Consider location and whether the stay will work with the participant’s existing supports, routines and connections.
- Discuss the participant’s individual support needs, including the level of support required during their stay.
- Check current availability with the provider, particularly if you need specific dates.
