How does the NDIS support individuals with disabilities?
May 16, 2022

If you’re new to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), understanding what support is provided by the NDIS compared to other services can be confusing. Aspire Hub is here to help you navigate the different types of support you might be eligible for and how the NDIS support individuals with disabilities.
Understanding NDIS Support
Many people ask, “How does the NDIS support individuals with disabilities?” The answer varies depending on individual needs and goals. NDIS funding is tailored to each participant, focusing on supports that are “reasonable and necessary” to help achieve personal goals and enhance independence.
Key Definitions
-
NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency): An independent statutory agency responsible for implementing the NDIS.
-
NDIS: The National Disability Insurance Scheme, which funds costs associated with living with disability, including housing, assistive technology, support workers, and more.
-
NDIS Plan: A personalised plan developed after meeting with an NDIA representative, outlining the supports and services you need based on your individual goals and needs.
-
NDIS Providers: Service providers delivering supports funded by your NDIS plan. Some are ‘NDIS registered providers,’ meeting strict government quality and safety requirements.
-
Disability Support Pension (DSP): A financial aid for people who cannot work due to a permanent condition. Unlike the NDIS, DSP is for daily living expenses such as food or rent.
NDIS Support Budgets
Your NDIS plan comprises three main support budgets:
-
Core Supports: Funding for everyday activities related to your plan and life goals.
-
Capacity Building Supports: Funding to help you build independence and skills.
-
Capital Supports: Funding for higher-cost items like assistive technology, home/vehicle modifications, or Specialist Disability Accommodation.
It’s important to note that Core funding is flexible and can be used with other Core support types but not with Capacity Building or Capital supports.
What the NDIS Funds
The NDIS may fund supports that are:
-
Related to your disability.
-
Reasonable and necessary to achieve your goals.
-
Not funded by other government systems or community services.
Examples include:
-
Daily personal activities.
-
Transport to enable participation in community, social, economic, and daily life activities.
-
NDIS housing.
-
Workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment.
-
Therapeutic supports including behaviour support.
-
Help with household tasks to maintain your home environment.
-
Assistance with aids or equipment assessment, setup, and training.
-
Home modification design and construction.
-
Mobility equipment.
-
Vehicle modifications.
However, the NDIS will not fund:
-
Supports unrelated to your disability.
-
Day-to-day living costs not related to your support needs.
-
Items that cause harm or are illegal.
-
Supports that can be more appropriately or effectively delivered by another system, such as health or education.
