If you or someone you love receives Supported Independent Living (SIL) supports\u00a0in Perth,\u00a0there’s\u00a0a change taking effect this year\u00a0that’s\u00a0worth understanding now, rather than after it affects your household. From\u00a01 July 2026, providers delivering SIL\u00a0are required to\u00a0register,\u00a0or be\u00a0in the process of registering,\u00a0with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. If your current provider\u00a0isn’t\u00a0registered and\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0apply in time, you may need to find one that is.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s what’s\u00a0changing, what it means for you\u00a0and your\u00a0family, and the questions worth asking any SIL provider right now.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What’s changing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Supported Independent Living has, until now, been one of the few high-support NDIS services an unregistered provider could legally deliver. That’s ending. Under a new registration category\u00a0–\u00a0Group 0138, Assistance with Supported Independent Living\u00a0–\u00a0anyone delivering SIL is required to register with the NDIS Commission.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Providers who were already delivering SIL without registration don’t need to be fully registered on 1 July 2026 itself, but they do need to have applied by\u00a01 October 2026, and\u00a0can continue supporting participants while that application is assessed. New providers entering the SIL space can’t start delivering the service until their registration is\u00a0approved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reasoning behind the change is straightforward. SIL supports people with some of the highest support needs in the NDIS, often around the clock, and until now those providers haven’t been required to meet the Commission’s Practice Standards, undergo independent audits, or complete worker screening checks in the same way most other registered providers do. Draft SIL Practice Standards were released in late May 2026, with a final version expected by the end of June and enforceable from 1 July.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What it means for you or your family<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

If your current SIL provider is already registered, nothing changes for you.\u00a0Your plan, your funding and your supports continue as they are. If your provider\u00a0isn’t\u00a0registered and\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0apply by the October\u00a0deadline,\u00a0they’ll\u00a0need to stop delivering SIL, and\u00a0you’ll\u00a0need support to transition to a provider who is registered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Either way, it’s a reasonable moment to ask the question directly rather than assume. A provider delivering SIL after 1 July 2026 without registration, or without an application in progress, is operating outside the NDIS Act\u00a0–\u00a0and that’s not a risk worth carrying quietly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
